June was a great month for Fremont 5 CTC!
We started it off with our Summer Kick-off Family Dinner Night in West Haven. We had free food for everyone who came from food trucks, music and fun from our DJ, and yard games for all. The weather was perfect and the atmosphere so laid back - it truly was a great way to spend an evening kicking off our summer!
We were asked the question, “What’s the catch? Why are you giving us dinner for free?” Fremont 5 was happy to share that research shows frequent family meals are associated with lower eating disorders, less alcohol and substance use, less violent behavior, and fewer feelings of depression and thoughts of suicide in youth.
Family dinner nights fit right in with our mission to create a healthy environment for the communities within the Fremont High School boundaries by using evidence-based prevention science strategies to advocate for healthy lifestyles and habits, promote responsible and involved citizenship, and encourage lifelong learning.
So what’s the catch? If we can get you to eat dinner with your loved ones, we get to help our community be better than it already is!
Fremont 5 was also able to encourage some learning at two separate mindfulness classes in June. Our facilitator taught a group of youth and a group of not-so-youth the benefits that breathing has on our mind, body, and emotions.
Feedback from attendees included, “That class was really fun!” and “I needed that class! I need to take it again as well!” If you are interested, watch for more information this fall for more opportunities to attend “Learning to Breathe.".
Some of our coalition members were able to attend the Bryce Canyon Prevention Summit and learn about Leveling Up the prevention efforts in our area. Our own Community Board Chair, Sheri Bingham, represented Fremont 5 well as she sat on a coalition panel and shared ideas and tips at the conference.
Just like Mario has to Level Up to save the Princess Peach, as community members, it is up to us to save even just one person or family from the sadness that might come from underage substance use and from mental health challenges.
Did you know Fremont 5 has a Youth Group? We do! These teens learn about the need for prevention efforts and bring their perspective to our efforts. They get to plan and participate in community events and service opportunities.
In June, our Youth Group was attended a Leadership Retreat. They came together through a Weber State Challenge Course and learned more about the importance of each individual person on the team. These youth are impressive and their willingness to help their classmates and peers always amazes their advisors!
Our Youth Group also represented Fremont 5 during West Haven Days and the Farr West Freedom Festival. They made sure to give everyone watching the West Haven parade the chance to get candy - lots of candy!
They also provided popcorn and cotton candy to everyone watching the Farr West Guns and Hoses softball game at Farr West Park. Our youth make a mean mixed flavor cotton candy!
If you are or have a youth who might be interested in joining our group, watch for more information about our recruitment activity that will be in September.
Our volunteers are taking a little break in July so they can come back strong in August and September! Soon we will be meeting with key leaders in our communities and schools to plan for the upcoming school year and we are excited at some of the possibilities! We will spread the word when we have finalized dates.
